What can Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture offer a chronic fatigue sufferer?
I have treated many cases of chronic fatigue (CF) over the years and I can say that many acupuncture points don’t suit CF. That’s right, this is one of those conditions where if you put in too many points or leave the points in for too long, the patient will feel completely drained afterwards.
CF, or as it appears to me, is a a systemic but particularly brain and nervous system inflammatory condition. The most perplexing thing in a Chinese medicine perspective is that what you pick up from your diagnostics, such as pulse taking, seems to contradict what the patient is telling you.
And this must be one of the most incredibly frustrating things for the patient. Often they don’t look exhausted, their pulse seems strong, all their blood tests are normal. But of course internally, their brain doesn’t work, joints or stomach hurts, glands are swollen, sleep doesn’t help, productive output is very low.
So how do we treat it?
Over the years I have found what works for me and my patients. The treatments are sometimes similar, but always individualized to the patient. We use formulas that are based on 2,000 years of use and short, gentle acupuncture treatments that don’t leave you feeling wiped out.
